Sound Localization Training

Improve your brain's ability to identify the direction and distance of sounds.

Protocol Steps:

  1. Sit comfortably in a relatively quiet room with your eyes closed.
  2. Have a partner make soft, brief sounds (like snapping fingers, clapping softly, or using a clicker) from different locations around you (left, right, front, back, above, below, near, far).
  3. After each sound, point to where you perceived the sound originating from.
  4. Your partner can provide feedback on accuracy.
  5. Start with distinct locations and gradually make the locations closer together or vary the distance more subtly.
  6. Practice for 5-10 minutes daily. If practicing alone, you can use multiple small sound sources (e.g., phone notifications set to different sounds placed around the room) or specialized audio training apps.

Why It Works:

Sound localization relies on subtle differences in the timing and intensity of sound reaching each ear (interaural time differences and interaural level differences). This training helps your brain become more attuned to these cues, improving spatial hearing accuracy, which is crucial for navigating environments and understanding speech in noise.
